Working for Quixote Expeditions

Team South work with Quixote Expeditions down in Antarcticam, providing a series of 2 and 3 week expeditions in Antarctica for small intimate groups, on board their 21m sailing ketch, Ocean Tramp.

Ocean Tramp is a specifically designed high latitude ocean going ketch and the expeditions provide excellent opportunities for scientists, photographers and adventures to experience the magnificent continent of Antarctica.

Quixote Expeditions also provide expeditions on board their 26m motor vessel, Hans Hansen – an ex Swedish lifeboat designed for ice conditions.

Cook & Guest Liaison

Position for an experienced cook on board, to cater for up to 8 guest and 4 crew and looking after the well being of the guests.

We are looking for a committed candidate to join the boat in Ushuaia (tbc) late November and live aboard through until early March.

An ideal candidate is someone interested in sailing, Antarctica, ecology, wildlife and adventure and have a desire to commit for more than one season.

The role includes

  • Stocking up vessel in Ushuaia for the season ahead.
  • Menu planning for Antarctic season.
  • Food provision management.
  • Meal preperation, cooking and organisation of domestic duties on board.
    • Crew and guest provide support with this.
  • Management of guest change over.
  • Client care.

Remuneration

  • $125 USD per day when there are no passengers on board
  • $160 USD per day with passengers on board
  • A bonus of $900 USD per month paid at the end of a successful season

Qualifications required

  • Basic STCW 95
  • Sailing skills are an advantage
  • The successful candidate will be expected to complete and pass the IAATO Expedition Leader Exam (links will be provided) – there are no direct fees associated with this.(Sailing qualifications an advantage).

Provided

  • Your flights, and expenses, to and from the boat are provided (if flying from Europe or United Sates).
  • Full board is provided on sailing vessel Ocean Tramp.

Antarctic Skipper Intern

This year sees the start of Quixote expeditions training programme to give a fit, healthy, enthusiastic, trainee skipper experience in Antarctica. We are looking for an individual with a can do attitude who would be available from October 2020 to March 2021. The successful candidate would ideally be available to return as first mate the following year and then subsequently progress on to skipper.

The intern will work alongside the regular crew and learning will include –

  • Pre season vessel preparation, working under the guidance of an experienced ship right and maritime technician.
  • Sailing the Beagle Channel and Drake Passage, learning offshore sailing skills in temperate and Polar waters.
  • Engine and power system management of a commercial sailing yacht.
  • Assisting crew on the expeditions among the Antarctic ice waters.
  • Experience of ice navigation.
  • Training in Antarctic shore landings and expedition guiding by foot.
  • Passenger care.

Remuneration

  • A stipend of $600 USD per month is allocated to the successful candidate.

  • Full board is provided on sailing vessel Ocean Tramp.

Qualifications required

  • Commercial Endorsed Yachtmaster or equivalent. International Certificate of Competency in Power-boating (or equivalent), plus experience in driving small tiller steered inflatable boats.
  • Expedition experience on land and water is an advantage.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to complete and pass the IAATO Expedition Leader Exam (links will be provided) – there are no direct fees associated with this.
